What Is the PTE Core Speaking Section?

Everything you need to know about the PTE Core Speaking section - from exam format, expert tips, and proven strategies to improve your speaking performance.
The PTE Core Speaking practice is part of Speaking and Writing, which is the first and longest module of the PTE Core exam. Part 1 comprises the Speaking & Writing modules lasting around 50–65 minutes in total.
In this part, you have to complete 7 question types, out of which 5 tasks focus on speaking skills only. The test is fully computer-based, and you record your responses using a microphone.
You are required to listen carefully to each prompt and respond within the given time. Your answers are recorded automatically, so timing and clarity are important throughout the test.

The PTE Core Speaking Read Aloud task requires you to read a given text aloud in a clear and accurate way. You will be shown a passage of up to 60 words, which you need to read and record using a microphone.
Before you start speaking, you are given around 30–40 seconds to read the text and prepare. Once the recording begins, a short tone will play, and you must start speaking immediately.
You should not begin before the microphone opens, as your response will not be recorded.
