The PTE Exam Pattern in the USA

The PTE Academic for USA exam is a 2-hour test that includes Speaking, Writing, Listening, and Reading. There used to be an option 10-min break between the Reading and Listening sections which has now been removed. During the test, you will encounter 20 different question types split into the 4 main modules.

These 20 question types will range from multiple choice questions and essay writing to listening to audios & repeating information. So, you will need to practice well before the exam. Part 1: Speaking & Writing - 54 to 67 minutes

In the 1st part of this section, you will get some time to prepare for the response. Once the preparation time is over, the microphone opens & your response is recorded. A user will get only one chance to get their responses recorded and hence, an aspirant will have to be well prepared for the PTE exam for USA.

  • Read Aloud: Aspirant will have to read a passage on the screen and record the answer within 35 seconds.
  • Repeat Sentence: You will be hearing a sentence and will have to repeat it back into the microphone as it is within a given time.
  • Describe Image: An image or a graphical representation will be put forth on the screen, with about 25 seconds to understand & prepare. After this, you must record and respond to the image within 40 seconds.
  • Retell Lecture: : An audio / video lecture will be played. While the audio is on, you are expected to note down the important points from the lecture & then repeat them back to the best of your knowledge & understanding.
  • Answer Short Question: A short question will be asked in the form of an audio & you will need to listen to the question and speak out your answer in one or a few words.
  • Summarize Written Text: For this question type, you must read a passage and write down the summary of that passage in not more than a sentence with a word limit of 5 to 75 words, for the PTE Academic USA. This task is expected to be completed within 10 minutes, and you will also get an option of cut, copy, and paste from your own response. You can either choose words from the passage or type in your own words that you would like to read in the sentence and formulate your response within the specified time frame.
  • Essay: A topic or question is given to you & you are required to compose an essay of about 200 to 300 words. For this particular question, you will get a total of 20 minutes to type in & record your response.

Part 2: Reading - 29 to 30 minutes

  • Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks: A passage is given with several blanks. Each blank will contain a drop-down list of some words & you will need to choose the most suitable answer one for that blank.
  • Multiple Choice Questions: You must read a passage and then answer the question asked. There would be one or more than one correct option to choose from the various options.
  • Re-order Paragraphs: Aspirants will be given jumbled up sentences, and they will have to rephrase or re-order the passage by rearranging these sentences in the correct order.
  • Reading Fill in the Blanks: Students have to read a paragraph with blanks and choose the right word from a list of words to fill in the blank with the appropriate word.

Part 3: Listening - 30 to 43 minutes

In the 1st part of this section, you will get some time to prepare for the response. Once the preparation time is over, the microphone opens & your response is recorded. A user will get only one chance to get their responses recorded and hence, an aspirant will have to be well prepared for the PTE exam for USA.

  • Summarize Spoken Text: You are required to listen to audio and write down your response by summarizing the concept of recorded audio. Your answer needs to be within 50 to 70 words.
  • Multiple Choice Questions: You must listen to an audio and then answer the question asked. There would be one or more than one correct option to choose from the various options.
  • Fill in the Blanks: Students are required to listen to audio & then fill in the blanks with the appropriate word in the passage of the same audio.
  • Highlight Correct Summary: Aspirants will need to listen to the audio and then choose the sentence that best describes the audio.
  • Highlight Incorrect Words: An audio plays with the script of the audio present in front of the student. However, some words from the audio are changed in the script. The student is required to mark each of the words that have been changed in the passage.
  • Select Missing Word: An audio is played, for which the last part is beeped out. A student will need to choose the correct word / phrase from the provided options.
  • Write From Dictation: A sentence is played in an audio form & the user is required to type down the sentence in exactly the same way as it should be written.

Minimum PTE Score for USA

Your PTE Academic for USA scores are released in about five business days after completing the examination. The overall score will range between 10 and 90 & will be given in 4 separate modules with an overall score for the exam. Your overall score will be an average of the individual points in each module.
