Overview
PTE Core is a brand new English language proficiency test that has been announced by Pearson’s group & is going on board in February 2024. It is designed to assess general English skills for everyday situations, rather than academic English skills. It has been approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for all Canadian government economic visa categories including migration, work, or citizenship visas. It consists of four sections: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, and uses AI to evaluate and score the test taker's English level.

However, some differences between PTE Core and PTE Academic have been discussed below.
The difference between PTE Core and PTE Academic is that PTE Core is a new, IRCC-approved general English test that focuses on testing your English skills in everyday situations, rather than in academic settings. PTE Core is accepted for all Canadian government economic visa categories and is aligned with the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level.
PTE Academic is an academic English test that assesses your English skills for study abroad and immigration purposes. PTE Academic is accepted by thousands of universities and colleges worldwide, as well as by the Australian and New Zealand governments for visa applications.
Apart from the above, there are certain questions from the PTE Academic exam, that have been replaced by new questions in the PTE Core exam along with a few minor changes in the existing questions. These questions are as follows:
Respond to a Situation in the Speaking module replaces Retell Lecture from PTE Academic. In this question type, you will need to listen to and read a description of a situation. Then answer a question about it with an extended response in 40 seconds.
Summarize Written Text remains the same with the summary word limit reduced to 25-50 words.
Write Email in the Writing module replaces Write Essay from PTE Academic. In this question type, you will need to write an email of approximately 100 words in 9 minutes.
Summarize Spoken Text remains the same with the summary word limit reduced to 20-30 words & time to answer will be 8 minutes only.
Highlight Correct Summary from PTE Academic in Listening has been removed in PTE Core
When you apply for a Canadian visa with PTE Core, you need to specify a CLB level for each of your language skills.
This table illustrates how CLB levels correspond to PTE Core scores so that you can determine what score you need to reach your Canadian immigration objectives.
