The PTE (Pearson Test of English) Exam analyzes the skills of four different abilities, like speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Each skill has its own significance and is useful to evaluate understanding of the provided tasks and the way a test taker responds to them appropriately. Speaking is a part combined with writing in the real exam.

The Pearson Test of English—PTE Speaking comprises different tasks in PTE Academic and PTE Core, according to the needs for the test format. PTE Academic has 8 tasks, while PTE Core has 5 tasks. AlfaPTE AI scoring has all tasks prepared to help candidates.

PTE Academic: Assesses the academic language usage while speaking.

PTE Core: Checks the test taker's ability to communicate fluently with general communication.

PTE Speaking Format and Time Allocation: A Complete Overview

🗣️ Part 1: Speaking (34-44 minutes):

This part focuses on your skills for communicating effectively using the English language. If a candidate stays quiet for more than 3 seconds, the microphone automatically turns off and the response is submitted, so a candidate needs to be very active and focused while doing this task to score high.

➤ Personal Introduction

This includes basic questions regarding your interests, hobbies, the need to take PTE, and whether it is for work or study purposes. It's just a normal conversation-type task to make the candidate comfortable and prepared for the upcoming tasks.

🕒 Timing: 30-40 seconds for preparation will be provided, and you need to speak for about 40-60 seconds, in a natural voice without getting stressed, as the remainder is not marked.

➤ Read Aloud

A two- to four-line paragraph is provided on the screen, and the candidate needs to verify the paragraph and read the same in a proper voice to score excellent marks.

PTE Academic: Read Aloud only contributes to Speaking.

PTE Core: Read Aloud contributes to both speaking and reading.

🕒 Timing: 30-35 seconds for preparation and 40 seconds to record your response.

➤ Repeat Sentence

An audio sentence of around 6-16 words is played only once; the candidate needs to repeat that as accurately as possible to score maximum marks. This contributes to both listening and speaking skills.

🕒 Timing: 3-7 seconds audio length and 15 seconds time to repeat the sentence.

➤ Describe Image

The candidate will be given an image on the screen that they must analyze and describe within the allotted time, covering all important aspects of the image.

🕒 Timing: Candidates have 25 seconds to analyze the image and 40 seconds to provide a detailed description of it.

➤ Re-tell Lecture (Only for PTE Academic)

An audio lecture of about 40–60 seconds will be played once, and the candidate needs to understand the lecture and be quick at note-taking skills to effectively note down the important points and retell them in the lecture sequence to score high.

🕒 Timing: 1 min for lecture, 5-10 seconds for getting ready, and 40 seconds to record your response.

➤ Answer Short Questions

Short questioning audios will be played for which the candidate needs to just provide a one-word or few-word phrase answer. Although not a high-scoring task, it still should be done.

🕒 Timing: 3-5 seconds for the question and 10 seconds to record your response.

➤ Summarize Group Discussion (Only for PTE Academic)

The discussion lasts three minutes and involves three participants, typically in an academic context, addressing issues related to educational scenarios, with the usual composition being either two males and one female or two females and one male. The candidate needs to listen to the discussion properly, make effective notes regarding it, and summarize it within the provided timeframe.

🕒 Timing: 3 minutes for discussion, 10 seconds for preparation, and 2 minutes to effectively summarize the discussion, including all the important information.

➤ Respond to the Situation

A prompt regarding an academic/general situation is provided, for which you have to understand the key information and respond accordingly to cover the important aspects of the situation.

🕒 Timing: 10 seconds to review the prompt, 10 seconds for prompt audio, 10 seconds to prepare yourself, and 40 seconds to record your response.
